Typotheque

Gonzo by Hunter S. Thomson

We often showcase samples of projects using Typotheque typefaces in the fonts in use section, however, this is the first time we choose to feature such a project at greater length. A new book published by AMMO (American Modern Books) with Hunter S. Thomson as its subject gave us all the reasons we needed to do so.

While the picture of the bulky clamshell cover box doesn't reveal much, the book is 28 x 35cm (11 x 14in), which created problems when using a 50mm lens to photograph it. The occasional fingers at the page edges in the pictures will give you an idea of the proportions of the book and type.

The 240-page Gonzo was designed by Smog Design out of LA, and presents hundreds of photos taken by Thomson himself, accompanied by his writing, and with an introduction by Johnny Depp. The book is organized as an easily accessible archive of Thomson's life. Smog Design used Fedra Sans Display for most of the text, ranging from gigantic headlines to small captions.

The impressive design and production of the book made us very proud that the literary legacy of Hunter S. Thomson lives on, and that we could also indirectly make a tiny contribution.
