The work of Karel Martens occupies an important place in the present European graphic design and typography. His work is both personal and experimental, but always very honest and direct, evident in his choice of paper, type, colour and format. Martens finds inspiration in the limitations of the profession and turns obstacles into challenges.
With over 50 years of design practice Martens has been a prolific designer of books and he has made significant contributions in the areas of postage stamps, coins, and building signage. He works in the tradition of Dutch modernism, yet keeps a certain distance from the trends.
