The Enschedé Type Specimens of 1768 and 1773

by John Lane

A 1993 facsimile of the famous type specimen from 1768 by the Enschedé type foundry with the supplement from 1773. The descriptions are included in a separate English-language book, written by John Lane. The Proef van letteren 1768 specimen presents the Enschedé type foundry in its heyday and gives an almost complete overview of the letters that could be obtained from Enschedé at that time. This involved not only Latin fonts, but also music, ornaments and foreign writing scripts such as Greek, Hebrew, Armenian, Arabic, or Syriac. In addition to this beautiful collection, this book also contains a number of copper engravings, including portraits of Laurenz Jansz Coster, our book printer; Joan Michael Fleischmann, creator of many of the letters, and a centerfold of the type foundry. Designed by Peter Matthias Noordzij and awarded as one of The Best Dutch Book Designs.
