Design Concept
Nocturno is an unapologetically calligraphic typeface with slightly oblique stress and sculpted, concave, almost flared serifs. The dark, broad-shouldered letter silhouettes provide superb legibility, and four finely tuned weights permit the creation of clear text hierarchies. Crisp, precise details, a generous x-height, flowing rhythm and rightward drag emphasise the sense of horizontality, guiding the reader’s eyes along the line for immersive reading.
A Typeface for Long-form Text
What makes text easy to read is not just well-designed letters, but also balanced horizontal and vertical dimensions of the text. Nocturno is designed for continuous reading, where it is critical that the counter-shapes are inextricably related to the outside of the letters. Typefaces for easy reading feature rhythmic stem intervals, and optically interrelated space between letters that create a harmonious rhythm of the text, aiding the reading process and optimal legibility. Additionally, Fedra Serif has unusual vertical stems, which get thicker towards the baseline, giving the typeface stability and a comfortable weight, even when reading in the smallest of sizes.
Complete Type System
Nocturno Display and Nocturno Text are well to the complexities of editorial design where the incisive display cuts draw attention, and the text version quietly gets the job done. Nocturno Stencil completes the serif styles of the type system. The low-contrast version Diurnal Text is a superbly legible sans typeface, and Diurnal Display implies a strong personality in larger sizes.
Numeral Styles
Each weight of Nocturno includes nine different kinds of numerals. Proportional old-style figures come as default figures in Nocturno. It also, however, includes lining figures, tabular numerals (both lining and old-style), small caps numerals, superior, inferior, circled and circled inverted numerals. For running text, old-style figures work best; for use in capital setting, use lining figures, and with the small caps, choose the specially designed Small Caps numerals applicable via OpenType layout features. When you take a licence for this font, you can choose your own default numeral variant.
