Fonts supporting the Armenian Script
This script is used to write Armenian, in Armenia and the worldwide Armenian diaspora, by around 10 million people. Historically, the Armenian script was also used to write Greek, Ottoman Turkish and Kurdish. The Armenian script is traditionally considered to have been invented by a Christian teacher, Mesrop Mashtots, in the early 5th century. It was most likely modelled on the Greek script, and follows its letter order. Only majuscule letters existed initially, with minuscule variants being developed in the 12th century. Punctuation marks for exclamation, emphasis and interrogation are represented as diacritics, as opposed to appearing independently at the end of sentences. They combine with vowel letters in words to indicate a change in tone. Two parallel orthographic traditions exist, Reformed (Eastern) and Traditional (Western), with minor differences between certain letterforms. The Reformed orthography is used in Armenia itself.
