Fonts with Optical Sizes

In the old days, when type was made from a physical material, letters were always designed in a specific size, which ensured the appropriate letter shapes for the given size. Today, digital fonts are scalable to any size, but the shapes may not work optimally for every size.

That’s why we design Optical size variations of fonts, to prioritise functionality in small text sizes, and elegance and impact for larger ones, modifying font proportions, letter details, the contrast between thick and thin strokes, and spacing between letters for a particular range of type sizes.
